Washington County Fair & Rodeo a celebration of rural life
The oldest county fair in Texas, the Washington County Fair, does more than just showcase the livestock of local 4-H and FFA students; it is a celebration of rural life in Washington County; and is a reminder of the glory days of the county fairs a couple generations ago.
The Washington County Fair runs from Sept. 15 through 23 at the Washington County Fairgrounds located at the intersection of East Blue Bell Road and Old Independence Road in Brenham.
The Washington County Fair features a rodeo, a carnival, live entertainment, exhibits and attractions; several contests, a fair queen contest, theme days and much more. The Washington County Fair Rodeo runs from Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 23 throughout the days of the fair.
A big attraction for the children is of course the Heart of American Shows Carnival, held at the fairgrounds. The carnival features the famous merry-go-round, roller coasters and many things sure to make the spine tingle a bit. The carnival runs from Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Saturday Sept. 23.
The fair, of course, centers around the work 4-H and FFA students put in all year to get ready for this special event. Of course there are baking, art, photography, textiles and many different categories in which the students can participate.
They also bring their animals to the show, to display the enormous amount of work that goes into getting a hog, a goat, lamb, chicken, rabbit, turkey or steer ready for the show.
There’s much more to see around the fair, including a petting zoo, roaming acts throughout the fairgrounds, pony rides, specialty acts, country store, mechanical bull, crafts and vendor, wine event, trail drive, Cowboy Church services, fair food, trail ride, and an antique tractor and machinery exhibition. The antique tractor and machinery exhibition gives people a chance to see how farmers used to get their jobs done as the nation transformed from a horse and buggy technology to a mechanized society.
Now all the contests at the Washington County Fair do not revolve around the school kids, nope, this fair includes some adult competition as well. So go and see what’s happening at the barbecue cook off, the chuckwagon cook off, pitch tournament, horseshoe tournament, bean bag tournament, washer tournament. There’s things for the kids, too, such as a talent show, Junior Mr. & Miss contest, kid’s pedal tractor races, mutton bustin’, wild steer saddling, little wrangler hay hauling, children’s pet show, greased pig contest, youth hay hauling contest, calf scramble, ag Olympics, livestock and dairy judging and an ag mechanics show.
Throughout the week of the fair, three days are set aside as a special theme day. Themes include Children’s Day, Veterans Day and Senior Citizens Day.
