Must Be Heaven

The City of Brenham is located in the heart of Washington County. Although most people think of it as the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream, actually Brenham has one of the most vibrant downtowns in Texas. Brenham is in east-central Texas, located approximately half way between San Antonio and Houston. This area of Texas is full of historical sites and is in the wildflower region of Texas. However, I am visiting Brenham for something else, a great eatery located in the downtown shopping area. While visiting the antique shops, art galleries, fine furniture stores, and other boutiques located on the square in Brenham. You may get hungry and Must Be Heaven Sandwich Shop is a perfect place to stop and relax.

Must Be Heaven Sandwich Shop has an extensive menu with classic deli-style sandwiches as well as a unique array of creative specialty sandwiches. The extensive menu offers all types of choices including quiches, baked potatoes, salads, and a great variety of homemade pies. When you take into account the Heavenly Combos (which includes an Entree, a side dish, and a drink) the choices are endless. Owners Traci and Charlie Pyle took over the business in 1999 and continued to grow a thriving location. They offer a fun, memorable eating experience for visitors to Brenham as well a perfect spot for locals to get delicious fresh food served fast.

Upon arriving at Must Be Heaven, you get the southern feel with jukebox-style music and the checkerboard black and white floor which transports you back in time. The next thing that you notice is the aroma of fresh baked bread which gives Must Be Heaven that homemade smell that everyone loves. You walk into a soda shop atmosphere from the sixties (which made me want to eat dessert first), but when you walk around the corner that the fresh baked smell is coming from the deli. Next, you notice the specials on the wall, which change daily. Whether it is Chicken & Dumplings, Crawfish & Rice Casserole, or the Quiche of the day Charlie is always cooking up something new.

I sampled several items while visiting Must Be Heaven. First I tried the Grilled Cheese & Pesto, which is a hot sandwich made with provolone and double muenster cheese on grilled sourdough bread. Served with a side of warm marinara dipping sauce it had Italian spices that were awesome. Next, I tried the Grilled Texas Monte Cristo which is a hot sandwich (served on your choice of bread, I had the homemade wheat) with smoked turkey breast; honey cured ham, pepper jack and provolone cheese, and red jalapeño jelly. This in-house creation was great with just the right amount of kick from jalapeño jelly, and it is grilled not fried which I enjoyed. After that, I sampled the Muffaletta which is a hot sandwich made with honey cured ham, peppered beef deli pastrami, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and green olive dressing on a grilled bun. If you like this Louisiana favorite, this is the sandwich for you because it is the best Muffaletta that I have had outside of New Orleans. However, my personal favorite was the daily special quiche, which had sausage, bell peppers, tomato, corn, and cheddar cheese. This quiche was light, flavorful, slightly spicy, and baked into a perfect crisp crust; I could not stop eating this it was great!

They serve Cheesecake, Cookies, Banana Splits, Ice Cream, Malts and Brownies. I sampled two of the homemade pies. Must Be Heaven usually keeps about ten different homemade pies from which to choose, however, because they use fresh ingredients the variety may change based on what is available. I had the Coconut Meringue Pie, and it was outstanding, this is not the kind of pie you can get from the supermarket, it has that old-time flavor and texture that is unmatched. However, I did not stop there. Next, I tried the Bourbon Chocolate Chip Pecan. I loved this pie; it tastes of pecans and chocolate, then you taste the subtle Bourbon flavor that is unmistakable, it is a superb blend of flavors.

Must Be Heaven offers something for everyone including their signature Chicken Salad served as a sandwich or in a half of an avocado. They have one of the largest vegetarian menus that I have seen, plus a great kid’s menu, and offer customized catering trays for take-out. Must Be Heaven is a perfect place to sit down and recharge while shopping with a Cappuccino, Coffee, Tea, or Fountain Coke with flavors (like vanilla or cherry if you are old enough to remember that drink).
